Elizabeth Alfson, MD

Adult Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

Welcome! I'm Liz Alfson, a board-certified psychiatrist who combines therapy and medications.

Compassion, presence, and commitment are my guiding lights. I believe that all people need to be seen, heard, and understood; that my patients are the experts on their experience; and that progress requires a trusting partnership between us. My approach is to identify together the patterns you have established, typically related to your past experiences, and address any barriers to change. At the end of a first appointment, I hope you will leave saying, "Something different happened today."

For those already in therapy or not desiring therapy at this time, I am experienced in managing a wide range of mental health issues with medications. I also routinely do therapy with people who do not take medications.

I attended college at Princeton University, medical school at the University of Virginia, and residency training at Harvard Longwood, where I was a chief resident. Since residency, I have trained in intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP), a focused experiential treatment that seeks to identify and work through problems to provide lasting change.

I offer in-person appointments at my office in central Austin, as well as appointments via secure videoconferencing.

I love and feel honored to do this work, and I look forward to learning how you and I might work together.
