Direct, practical psychiatry and psychotherapy for meaningful change
I'm Liz Alfson, a board-certified psychiatrist and experiential therapist based in Austin, Texas.
I work with adults who want meaningful change. My style is direct and practical, grounded in compassion and a deep respect for your capacity to understand yourself and participate actively in the process.
Compassion and careful attention shape how I engage and how I work. I listen closely for patterns, often shaped by earlier relationships or experiences, that may be limiting your ability to move forward.
We will work actively and collaboratively to identify what is happening and to address barriers to change. At the end of a first appointment, my goal is that you will leave thinking, “Something different happened today.”
I am experienced in managing a wide range of mental health issues with medications and also routinely do therapy with people who do not take medications.
I attended college at Princeton University, medical school at the University of Virginia, and residency training at Harvard Longwood, where I was a chief resident. Since residency, I have trained in intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP), a focused experiential treatment aimed at addressing entrenched problems and supporting lasting change.
I offer in-person appointments at my office in central Austin, as well as appointments via secure videoconferencing.
